the answer as soon as possible. Access I am a new student at City College – How can I use the Library? The first time you come to the Library remember to
bring your Student ID Card. New students are registered at the beginning of
the academic year. You will be asked to fill in a membership form in order
to be issued with a Library Card. You will need your Library Card for
borrowing books and for registering to use the computing and electronic
services. Students who have graduated from City College can
join the Library and register to use all the library facilities and
information resources. Cards are valid for a year and there is a charge of
15 Euro. Graduate students can borrow 5 items for two weeks. If you wish
to apply for membership you will need to complete a form and supply us with
a passport size photograph. Payment must be made on application and cards
are ready within the same day. Please note that you must make a telephone
reservation when you wish to use the computing and electronic services of
City Library. I am not a member of the Library - Can I use the
Library? People who are interested in becoming members of the
library can be issued with a library card that allows them to borrow from
the library and use the computing facilities. External members can borrow 2
items at a time for two weeks. If you wish to apply for membership you will
need to complete a form and supply us with you personal ID card and a passport
size photograph. Payment must be made on application and cards are ready
within the same day. Please note that it is not possible for external
members to use all the networked facilities of City Library. However, if you
wish to use a computer of the library computer labs, you must make a
telephone reservation. I have lost my Library Card - How do I get a
replacement? Once you notice the loss of your Library card you must
report it at once to avoid unauthorised use. Replacement cards can be
obtained from the Information Support Desk. You will need to fill in a form
and provide us with your personal details and Student ID card if you are a
student. If you are an external user you must provide us with a passport
sized photograph and you personal ID. The Information Support Desk
can not make cards up immediately. They are usually ready within two
or three working days. How can I use the Study
Rooms? The Study Rooms are situated on the 4th and
5th floors of the Library Building. Students of the College can
use them for group studying, assignments or for quiet reading. Please note
that prior reservation is required. Reservations can be made either by
approaching the Information Support Desk or by telephone. You will be asked
to leave your Student ID Card and sign the Study Room Log Book. How can I use the Audiovisual
Room & English Language Resources Centre? The
centre offers to students the opportunity to study independently, either
alone or in groups, using audiovisual facilities provided by City College. Please note that prior reservation is required.
Reservations can be made either by approaching the Information Support Desk
or by telephone. You will be asked to leave your Student ID Card and sign
the Study Room Log Book. What
are the Library Opening Hours? The library opening hours are 9:00-21:00 from Monday to
Friday and 9:00-2:00 on Saturday. Library working hours may be subject to
changes during holidays. Borrowing Borrowing depends on the category you belong to. Full
details of borrowing can be found on the Borrowing Entitlements Web page. Can
I borrow without my Library Card? You should always have your Library Card when
coming to the Library. Remember that your card is personal, so you cannot
give it to another student to use it for borrowing. If it has been lost or
stolen you should report it to the Library Issue Desk to avoid unauthorised
use. Within two working days your new card will be ready. In the meantime
you can reserve the books you wish to borrow or leave your Student ID Card
and take the books. The
book I need is on loan - Can it be kept for me when it is returned? If the book you
require is on loan you should fill out a Reservation Card, available at the
Issue or Information Support Desk. The item will be recalled from the person
who has it on loan and when it is returned we will let you know by phone or
e-mail. The item will be kept for you for one week. If it is not collected
within the week, it will be returned to the shelves. I
can not find the book I want to borrow Be sure that when you find a book on the catalogue, to
write down the correct class number in order to locate where the book is
shelved. If you do not find it on the shelves, check where the Library keeps
the books awaiting for shelving. If you still cannot find it, see if
somebody is already reading it in the Library. If the book is not already
borrowed by another member, please notify the librarians so they can search
for it. Books can be returned to the Issue Desk during the
Library opening hours. If you fail to return books on due date and if you
have not made a telephone or e-mail renewal, please note that you will be
subjected to a fine. If you want to borrow the same books again, the
librarians must first check to see if the books were in the meantime
reserved by another member. If not, you may borrow the books for another
week. Can
I borrow books during summer vacation? When the examinations of Spring semester are
finished all students must return to the Library the books they have
borrowed. In case you want to keep the books during summer of borrow others you must leave your Student ID Card at the Issue Desk. Locations What
is a classification number? The classification number is a sequence of numbers and letters
that gives you the exact location of a particular book. You should use the
classification number to locate a book on the shelves. Where
is the Reserve Collection? The Reserve Collection is at the ground flour of the
Library and houses all main textbooks and reference books included in the
Syllabi of the modules You cannot borrow books from the Reserve Collection.

is the Short Loan Collection? The Short Loan Collection is at the ground flour of the
Library and houses books and other items that are in heavy demand. They are
listed in the reading list of modules or at the handouts given to you during
Tutorials. You cannot borrow books from the short loan collection during
library opening hours. However, you can borrow them when the library closes
in the evening and return them when the library opens the next morning or
during weekends. For more information please see the Library web page for
the Short Loan Collection. All journals are listed on the catalogue by title. When
you find the journal that you require you should make a note of the class
number. Back copies of journals are bound in large volumes and kept at the
rear of the Library. The most recent copies are kept in pamphlet boxes. The
current volume of each journal can be found on the current journal shelves.
If you have problems locating the journal you require, please ask at the

Library. Library Services What
is the Library Catalogue – How can I use it? The Library Catalogue is an online catalogue that gives
information about material held at the library. In order to locate material
found on the catalogue you must always write down the class number and
location. What
is the Inter-Library Loan Service? The Inter-Library Loan Service helps you obtain
material not available at the Library. You must approach the Information
Services Desk for further details. The Intranet Service is available for students
of the College only. A username and password is required in order to use
this service. Intranet is where you will find all material related to the
modules, such as transparencies, articles for further reading, class notes. Electronic Information
Resources (EIR) How can I have access to the EIR
facilities? You must have a Username and Password in order to use
the Electronic Information Resources. If you are a student, your personal
username and password will be given to you a few days after you start your
classes. It is important that you memorize or make a note of your username
and password as you will need them to access various datasets and
information services at a later date. Prior booking is required in order to
use these facilities. However, if you are an external member you are not
allowed to use the electronic resources. For more information see the
Electronic Information Resources Web page. What electronic resources does the Library subscribe
to? The list of electronic resources that the Library
subscribes to is increasing all the time. A list of current databases and
networked CD-ROMs can be found at Electronic Information Resources Web page.
This page provides details of how to access the resources. Instructions for
how to use the electronic resources are available in printed copies in the
Library and in electronic format on the Learning Materials Web page. What resources can I access
off-campus? Most electronic databases and electronic journals can
be accessed off-campus if you are a student of City College. For further
details, please contact the Information Services Desk. How can I learn to use the EIR
facilities? Many databases have
online help available. However, training sessions are held for both staff
and students. Please note that you should book in advance a place, since
sessions are held in small groups. Can you show me how to find information on the
Web? You can use the Web Resources page to locate resources
for a particular subject. If you still need help you can approach the
Information Services Desk. IT Facilities How can I use the Computing facilities? You must have a Username and Password in order to use
the Computing Facilities of the Library. Your personal username and password
will be given to you a few days after you start classes. Please note that
you must book in advance to be certain that a computer will be available at
the Library for you to use. For more information see the Computing
Facilities Web page. Where can I find scanning
facilities? Bookable scanning facilities for students and staff are
available in the Library Computer Labs. For more information see the
Computing Facilities Web page. Printing An the beginning of
each Academic year all students are granted with 200 printing units free of
charge to use at the Library Computer Labs. When these units finish, you
must then approach the Library Issue Desk and open an account to buy units. Where can I collect my
printout? There is a printer available for student use only. The
printer is located at the entrance of the Library Computer Labs. When
printing material, please bear in mind that there may be a delay before it is
available for collection, especially when the computers are heavily used. Can I check how many print units I have in my
account? You can check the status of work you have printed by
logging into the 'check pages' selection by using your e-mail username and
password. Photocopying How can I use the photocopy
machine? You must ask for the 'counter machine' at the Library
Issue Desk in order to use the photocopy machine. If you are using the
photocopy machine for the first time ask the librarians for help. Please
note that there is a charge for photocopying. The Library does not offer a colour photocopying
service. However, we can help you locate a photocopy shop that offers
coloured photocopying.
