What is the WebCAT

WebCAT, is the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of City College Library. It contains records of all the books, periodicals, theses and audiovisual material held by the Library. WebCAT is available through the entire college network providing the following services:

§ Search by a specific Author, Editor, Translator, Corporate Body, etc.

§ Search by a specific Title

§ Search by a particular Subject/Keyword

§ Search by Call Number

§ Search by Category

§ Show where material is located in the Library


Accessing the Online Catalogue

The Library catalogue may be accessed as follows:

§ Web access from all computers in the Library and from the Computer Labs, situated at Tsimiski Building. An authorised username and password is required to log on to the available computing facilities of the College. To access the Online Library Catalogue visit City College homepage, click on the Library link to open the main Library Web page, and then locate the Library Catalogue option..

§ The Online Catalogue can also be accessed from any other personal computer connected to the Internet Explorer, by following the above steps.

Additionally, from the main Library Web page, you can access all the available Online Library Services, including Web Databases, the Electronic Journals collection, et al.

 


 

How to Use the Catalogue to Search for Books and other Material

Use the Search Books option to search through the entire stock held at the Library.

Type of Search

After you have entered the Search form of the Online Catalogue you will find several options on the screen for the type of search. 

Subject: Use this option to conduct a subject/keyword search.

Name: Use this option to retrieve items written by a specific person. You should know the author's last name.

Call Number: Type a Dewey Classification Number to locate items of the same subject category or to retrieve a specific title.

Title: Use this option if you know the first or any words in the title.

Category: Use the category option to limit the search to a specific part of the collection (e.g. search only the Computer Science books, or the Theses collection).

Title and/or Category: Alternatively, use the Combine option to narrow your search scope. 

When you have found the item you require on the Catalogue, you need to note both the Category, e.g.

§ Psychology Collection

§ Business Administration Collection

§ Reserved Collection (RSC)

§ Audiovisual Collection (ADVC)

§ Reference Collection (RFC)

§ Theses Collection (THC)

and the Classification Number, e.g.

§ 005.3 BAS 2nd ed.

§ MSc KRA 1997

§ 658.8 MAR

§ AUD

Use the Clear Search Field to conduct a new search.

Printing Result lists and Records

When the search is completed a list of results will appear on the screen. You can either print the entire list of the search results or browse through the screen to mark specific records for printing.

How to locate your item in the Library

You can either use the classification guides from the Library Layout  Web pages or approach the staff of Library Issue Desk to help you locate an item on the shelves. Alternatively, you can consult the printed classification guides available at the library desks.

If the item you require is in the catalogue, but is out on loan, you may reserve it for collection, as soon as it is available. If it is not on loan and still you are not able to locate it on the shelves, please inform the library staff to fill in a missing item form.

How to Use the Catalogue to Search for Journals and Articles

Search Journals Index

Use the Journals Index option to browse through an alphabetical list of the electronic journals the library subscribes to. You can limit your search to a specific:  

Journal Title: Use this option to browse through the entire content of a specific journal title.

Author: Use the author search option to locate articles written by a specific person. The last name of the author is required in order to produce search results.

Article Title: This option is for title search only. You must know the first words of the title in order to produce results. If you do not know the first word then use the keyword search. 

Keyword: Use this option to look for words in the article title, subject, or anywhere else in the record.

Use the Clear Search Field to conduct a new search.

Search Journals

Use the Search Journals form to search through the contents of 118 electronic journal titles held at the Library.

Type of Search

When entering the Search form of the Online Journal Catalogue you will find several options on the screen for the type of search. 

Keyword: Use the keyword option for a specific subject article search.

Author: Use this option if you are familiar with the author's last name.

Article Title: Use the title option if you know the first or any words included the article title.

Combine: Make a combination of the options available.

Each screen has on it examples to provide help on how to enter your search.

Limiting your search results

If your search has produced too many results, you can limit your search with the following options:

§ Use the Content Type to limit a search to a specific type of articles (e.g. case studies)

§ Use the Published between option to limit a search to a specific year or range of years (e.g. only year 1999, or 1999 to 2001)

Use the Clear Search Field to conduct a new search.

What next

When using the electronic journals database you can only view the abstracts of the articles. In order to acquire the full content of an article, you must first print the abstracts of the articles related to the subject of your interest, and then approach the Library Information Services Desk so the staff, can print or e-mail the Fulltext, the following day the latest. For students living outside Thessaloniki, material may be sent upon request, either by e-mail or post. Alternatively, online requests can be sent to: library@city.academic.gr

Please note that in order to view the fulltext of all articles sent through e-mail, you need to have Acrobat Reader software installed on your personal computer. If you do not have a copy of the software you can freely download it form the Adobe website.
