eBooks 

The term eBook refers to published materials, such as reference books, scholarly monographs, and trade books that have been converted into digital format for electronic distribution. They are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week - from any location in the world, with additional features such as an embedded dictionary, a linked Table of Contents, and easy keyword searchability.

The Library has purchased a number of ebooks from NetLibrary host service. An increasing number of ebooks and texts, usually classic works of history and literature, are also freely available on the web. The eBook Services can only be used by College staff & students with a valid username and password, provided by the Computing Centre

NetLibrary

What is netLibrary?

NetLibrary is the leading provider of electronic books (eBooks) and Internet-based content management services. Hundreds of publishers of academic, professional, reference, and scholarly books have adopted NetLibrary's digital rights management infrastructure. NetLibrary eBooks are full-text searchable. You may search every word in every book, as well as, search within a particular eBook.

What titles are available?

The Library has purchased the eBook collection of The Health Library, at Stanford. This is a collection of eBooks covering a wide variety of subject areas, including psychology & psychiatry, health sciences & medicine, humanities and social sciences. In addition, when you search the ebook collection you will note an option for accessing  publicly accessible ebooks   - which includes classic works of literature and history.

How can I access netLibrary?

This service is available via the entire college network. Each time you wish to check out an eBook you must first log in by following the below steps:
 

  1. Go to City’s Online Library Services web page
  2. Click on the NetLibrary option to connect to the web site
  3. Enter Username and Password in the Current members box to log in

Altenatively, you may contact the Library Information Services Desk to create a personal account.

How can I search for an eBook?

You can search for a NetLibrary eBook by entering your search terms into the boxes provided on the home page. Searchable fields include Title, Author, Subject, Keywords and ISBN. A keyword search box is also displayed, at the top of every NetLibrary page.

Browsing an eBook

You can browse the full text of a NetLibrary eBook for 15 minutes, without having to borrow the book by clicking on the Browse this eBook online link on the eBook summary page.

Checking out an eBook

To borrow an eBook click on the Check out and read online link on the eBook summary page. The eBook will be placed on your eBookshelf for a period of 24 hours. During this time you will have sole access to the title. When the loan period expires the book will be automatically removed from your eBookshelf. If the book you want to borrow is currently on loan you can register to be notified when it becomes available.

On the eBook shelf page you will see a list of the eBooks you currently have on loan and the time remaining on each book you have borrowed. By selecting options from the drop down menu you can also read the books, get a summary of the title details, add the book to your list of favorites or return the book to the Library.

Online dictionary

The American Heritage® Dictionary is embedded in every netLibrary eBook. This allows you to instantly look up the definition of any word while reading an eBook!
