History

Thessaloniki International Library (ThIL), a non-profit organization, was founded in March 1997, after the integration of the British Council Library Collection into the former CITY College Library. In September 1998, the Library was relocated to new premises. The newly founded library is the Library of CITY College, an Affiliated Institution of the University of Sheffield, UK, and is located within a building owned by the College (Koromila Building) at the centre of Thessaloniki. The Library occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The versatile character of ThIL collection allows the new library to operate both as an Academic and as a library of General Education. It is the only local English lending library, that is open to the general public.

Aims

The Library aims:

§ To support the learning, teaching and research needs of a high quality academic institution, by collecting, conserving and dissiminating information acquired in a variety of formats, including both printed and electronic.

§ To provide services that assist and encourage users to make the best possible use not only of the Library's collections but also of sources of information available throughout Thessaloniki and beyond.

§ To provide an environment conducive to productive study and research in the Library.

§ Furthermore, to support the need for the vocational development of the academic staff and for general reading at a higher education level.

Profile of the Library

The collections of the Library include:

§ over 28,000 books
§ non-print items in a wide range of formats; including 5500 electronic journals
§ 220 volumes of serials (journals, magazines, newspapers).

Printed and audiovisual items are housed throughout three floors of the Koromila building, all part of the collection of the Library. Electronic information resources are available on both local and remote servers. These include electronic journals, bibliographic and fulltext databases, links to selected pages including information for courses,  CITY's clubs, help desk support, and training on using the computer centre's facilities, all developed for students by our academic and support staff.

Access to electronic information resources is available through computers connected to the college network. Selected resources are available to City College staff and students by accessing the Online Library Services remotely.

Users of the Library

The Library's information resources are intended to be used by academic staff, students and administrative and technical staff of City College. Materials are acquired to support the College's programs for research, teaching and learning.

The collection is also used by various other groups, such as students from other institutions and members of the public. However, selection and development of the collection take partly account of the needs of such user groups.

Staff of the Library

CITY Library is run by the Vice Principal of Information Services, the Director of the Library, the Head Librarian, two professionally trained, full-time employed librarians, while support staff is added to the above from time to time. The library staff is always available to assist users of CITY Library when help is required.
