Accessing the Online Library Services & Facilities

Each time you are at the College you should try to make full use of the Library services and facilities, as well as, borrow all the items you are likely to need.

However, students who have a computer at home or at work, which is connected to the Internet Explorer, can save precious time, since not only can they search for information by distance, but can also plan in advance, what they have to do in their next visit to the Library.

The Online Library Services, including the Online Library Catalogue (OPAC),  may be accessed from  the main Library Web page,  by clicking on the related links. Students can use these services to:

§ Check what books the library holds

§ Check what journals the library holds

§ Reserve books you require and renew those you have on loan

§ Access bibliographic and fulltext databases

§ Access the electronic journals collection

§ Search for subject resources via our Subject Pages

§ Find links to various Web Resources

§ Contact library staff by e-mail with enquiries or problems

When you search the Library Online Catalogue from your personal computer at home or work and find books or articles you require, you can ask us to post them to you, or reserve them for collection on your next visit to the Library.

Borrowing from the Library

When first registering with the Library all students are given an "Information Package" which includes guides that explain in detail all available services and facilities. Borrowing regulations and membership cards are also included in that package. If for any reason you do not hold such a package you may request a copy from the Information Services Desk.

The majority of books in the library are available for standard loan, but special rules apply for books that are course reserves or on heavy demand. When searching, the online catalogue indicates the loan category of each book.

Types of Loan

Borrowing Rules

Standard loan

Two weeks.

May be renewed twice.

Special arrangements are made particularly for part-time students. Postgraduates may borrow up to three items at time for a period of 4 weeks. Since it is difficult for part-time students to come into the Library, they are allowed to authorise another person to collect books on their behalf as long as they inform in advance the Library Issue Desk. The authorized person should bring some form of personal identification, along with your Library Card and Student ID Card.

Returning loans

Books should always be returned to a member of the library staff at the Library Issue Desk during working hours. Please note that strict fines apply to those who return overdue books. Failure to pay a fine will result in the withdrawal of all borrowing entitlements, including access to the library computing facilities and not being allowed to request interlibrary loans.

Renewing loans

Renewals may be made in person or by an authorised person by approaching the Library Issue Desk between 09:00am to 21:00pm Monday to Friday and 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturdays.

Alternatively, the Library offers a telephone and e-mail renewal service for standard book loans. Therefore part-time students may use this service in order to renew the items they have borrowed. E-mail renewal requests may be sent to: library@city.academic.gr. Standard book loans can be renewed twice, provided no one else has reserved the items and there are no outstanding fines.

Electronic Information Resources

The Library provides access to a vast range of electronic information resources including online databases and electronic journals covering almost every subject area. All newly registered students, with e-mail accounts are automatically registered for on-campus and remote access to the electronic information services.

Databases

Most databases are fulltext providing access to the full content of periodical articles, newpapers and conference proceedings. Where only citations and abstracts are available you can use the Interlibrary Loan service to obtain the fulltext of the material you require.

Details of all available databases can be found at the Electronic Information Resources Library Web pages.

Electronic Journals

The Library provides Internet access to a large number of fulltext electronic journals. When accessing remotely the electronic journals you can only view the abstracts of the articles. You can contact the Library Information Services Desk by telephone or e-mail to obtain the fulltext of articles within a working day.

Please note that in order to view the fulltext of all articles you need to have Acrobat Reader software installed on your personal computer. If you do not have a copy of the software you can freely download it form the Adobe website.

Interlibrary Loan Service

If periodicals or articles you require are not held in the stock of the Library, you may apply for them by using the Inter-library Loan Service. Please note that if you have any overdue books or fines you will not be allowed to use this service.

Order forms are available and can be submitted to the Information Services Desk, either in person or by e-mail. You must ensure that the bibliographic details of the requests are complete and accurate. In cases were details are incorrect or data is omitted, delays might arise. The Information Services staff will notify you by telephone or e-mail if a significant delay is anticipated and when an item is received for collection.

The Library can supply the requested material within one week if ordered from a national library and two weeks when ordered from abroad. The requested material is sent by post to home or business address. When the electronic version of a document is available you may receive your request by e-mail within two business days.
