What to do when you can not Find an Item in the Library

Finding your Way Around the Library

The Library facilities occupy four floors of the Proxenou Koromila building altogether. The entrance to the Library is on the second floor, where you will first see the Issue Desk which manages circulation services and all general enquiries regarding the Library collections. On this floor, you will also find the Information Services Desk, where staff can help with information queries, or any problems you may have with the Online Catalogue or other Electronic Information Resources. The Information Services Desk is also responsible for the Interlibrary Loan Service. This is the service which will enable you to obtain material which is not held in the Library.

The library PCs which offer access to the Library Online Catalogue, the Electronic Information Resources and Microsoft Office facilities are situated on the second floor, as well. The second floor also includes a separate room, with a self-service photocopy machine.

The Reserve and Short Loan sections comprising Textbooks and References included in course syllabi, can be found beside the Library Issue Desk. The Business, Economics, Mathematics & Statistics collections are stored on the second floor. If you cannot find the information you need, the staff of the Issue Desk can always advise you.

The third floor of the Library houses the Computer Science, Psychology, Social Sciences, History, Literature and Fine Arts books. The Science Fiction and Juvenille Literature collections are kept on the third floor, as well.

The Reference Collection consisting of dictionaries, bank reports, company annual reports and other key general reference resources are kept in front of the Library Issue Desk.

The Offprint Collection, including key articles and lecture notes, is kept behind the Information Services Desk. You should consult the library staff to access this collection.

Current issues of Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title within their individual subject areas. If you cannot find a particular volume ask at the Library Issue Desk. Back issues and bound periodicals are kept in a special reserved area located on the third floor.

City College Theses are shelved by year and in alphabetical order, and can be found in special reserved areas.

The Self-access English Language Resources Centre and the Audiovisual Room are situated on the fourth floor of Proxenou Koromila building.  Material held in the Self-access English Language Resources Centre can be consulted within the reading room between 9:00am and 4:00pm by asking the library staff.

On the fourth and fifth floors of the Proxenou Koromila building, you can find the Study Rooms available for group or individual reading. To use the Study Rooms, you should always book in advance by contacting the Library Issue Desk

Finally, the Refreshment area where students can drink refreshements, coffee and smoke, is situated on the fourth floor of the building.

Where to Locate Material in the Library

The Library's collections, including books and journals are distributed throughout the second and third floors of the Proxenou Koromila building. In order to find the information you require, you always need to use the Online Catalogue and not just rely on browsing at the shelves where the main body of books in a particular subject area are shelved.

In many cases, in order to locate material, it is better to look in several different physical locations within the Library. For example, to complete an assignment on ‘Psychology of Middle Aged Employees’ you might need to consult books shelved in each of the Psychology, Personnel Management, and Sociology subject areas.

Where to find a book
Using the online catalogue is the only way to find out whether a particular book is in stock and where to find it on the shelves. When you find a book you require, on the Library Online Catalogue (WebCAT), note the Category (e.g. Computer Science), the Classification Number (e.g. 005.256 GER),and the Location (e.g. Main Collection, Third Floor).

You may consult this brief guide, or use the detailed printed guides available on the library desks. If you require further information, please visit the Classification Guides Web pages.

Finding the book on the shelf
Go to the floor given in the location and look to find the correct category. Look at the range guides at the beginings of the bookshelves. Find the one which includes the numbers in the first line of the classification number. Then look at the labels on the spine of the books to find the one which exactly matches all 3 lines of the classification number.

Where to find a journal
To find a journal, look in the Search Journal Index option of the Catalogue, under its title. As an example, look for ‘Management Decision’. The screen shows you its exact location and whether it is available in printed or electronic format. Consult the Library Catalogue Web pages for additional help.

Alternatively, visit the Periodical Collection Web pages to find out if a particular title is held by the Library.

If you need help locating items, you may consult the Library Issue Desk staff.
