Classification Guides
The Library uses the Dewey
Decimal Classification scheme to sort the book collection. Books are
divided into specific subject areas and sub-topics. The
‘classification’ or ‘call number’ of each book is very important in helping you
locate the material you are looking for on the shelves. The classification numbers are made
up of a main subject code (numerical sequence) and line of other information, e.g.
The classification number 657.15 MAR 2nd ed.
comprises:
657.15 - The subject area,
in this case Managerial Accounting
MAR - Other information - either the first
three letters of the author's name or book title
2nd ed. - and the
number - either of the edition, except when it is the first or the number of
the volume
Within each subject area the books are shelved numerically
and alphabetically according to the second line of their classification number
which indicates the specific item on the shelf.
