Classification Guides

The Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme to sort the book collection. Books are divided into specific subject areas and sub-topics. The ‘classification’ or ‘call number’ of each book is very important in helping you locate the material you are looking for on the shelves. The classification numbers are made up of a main subject code (numerical sequence) and line of other information, e.g.

The classification number
657.15 MAR 2nd ed. comprises:

657.15 - The subject area, in this case Managerial Accounting

MAR - Other information - either the first three letters of the author's name or book title

2nd ed. - and the number - either of the edition, except when it is the first or the number of the volume

Within each subject area the books are shelved numerically and alphabetically according to the second line of their classification number which indicates the specific item on the shelf.

The classification guides on the following Web pages intend to provide a brief guide to the book sequence only. For information on how to find material held by the Library after you have the classification number of an item, please connect to the Library Layout Web page.
