The Reserve Collection

Definition and Purpose of the Reserve Collection [CITY Library Reserve Policy]

The Reserve Collection includes items (such as textbooks, books, personal copies of items, journal articles and/or photocopies, disks, audiovisual materials, past exams, links to URL’s for electronic resources, etc) selected by the Academic staff with the purpose to further support academic learning and improve quality of education.

The purpose of the Reserve Collection is to:

  • Support the needs of a certain class or group of students.
  • Ensure that all students have equal and efficient access to highly-demanded materials.
  • Protect items that are at a high risk of misuse or vandalism.

The Library holds both a “traditional” Reserve Collection which includes textbooks, books, journal articles, tests, A/V media, and other items, and an Electronic Reserve System that provides online access to material uploaded to Claroline, the CITY’s E-Learning Management System. The items of the “traditional” Reserve Collection are maintained in a separate location within the Library, and access to them is more limited than is the access to items in general circulation.

Location

The Reserve Collection is located on the ground floor of the Library (2nd floor) and is separated by department. Colored stickers on the spine of the material indicate the department. For further location details see the Library Layout Web page.

Use of the Reserve Collection

Material included in the Reserve Collection is not available for loan under any condition, unless requested by the lecturer. In case certain material is less likely to be in heavy demand, the lectrurer may request that a copy be placed in the Short Loan Collection on a two-day loan period.

Otherwise, students may use the Reserve Collection  within the premises of the Library or at the Study Rooms provided they leave their Library and Student Identification Cards at the Library Issue Desk.
