HRH Crown Princess Katherine and Theo Angelopoulos receive Honorary Graduate Degree at the CITY-Sheffield Graduation Ceremony
CITY College, affiliated institution of the University of Sheffield in the region and the University of Sheffield held a glamorous Graduation Ceremony at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, on Saturday, 10th of November 2007. The ceremony followed the academic tradition of British Universities.

In CITY College’s graduation ceremony, HRH Crown Princess Katherine received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Sheffield in recognition of the contribution her charity work has made to the Balkan region. An Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letter, in absentia, was also conferred upon Theo Angelopoulos, in recognition of his distinguished career as a film director.
The Honorary Degree was conferred upon HRH Crown Princess Katherine, by Professor Micheleine Beaulieu, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, in the presence of Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Tony Crook, Mr. Ioannis Ververidis, Principal of CITY College and all senior academic officers of CITY College and the University of Sheffield.
Ms Phoebe Economopoulos, Mr. Angelopoulos’ wife, received his Honorary Degree on his behalf and thanked the University of Sheffield for making such a great honour to her husband. She also read out a few words that he would have liked to address to the audience, had he be present.

In the Princess’s oration, Professor Crook referred to her charity work highlighting the warmth of her personality, her sensitivity and concern about human pain and her ability to communicate through her heart. After receiving her degree the Princess, obviously touched, addressed a short speech to the audience, thanking her parents for inspiring her to care for people in need. She also thanked her husband, HRH Crown Prince Alexander, who was also present at the ceremony, for fully supporting her humanitarian efforts. Finally, she accepted the University of Sheffield’s Honorary Degree and added that it is an honour to receive a degree from such a well-respected and highly esteemed University.
Approximately 300 CITY-Sheffield graduates received their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the graduation ceremony. The ceremony also saw the award of the first Doctorates to students who have undertaken their PhD studies at the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) in Thessalonki. SEERC is a unique collaboration between the University and CITY College which seeks to promote research capacity in the region.
The graduation ceremony was well attended by Mr Milan Dimitrijevic, Consul General of Serbia in Thessaloniki, Mr. Panagiotis Psomiadis, Prefect of Thessaloniki, Mr. Nikos Panagopoulos, Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr Parthenopoulos, General Director of the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace and other distinguished guests. A total of 1300 were present at the ceremony, parents and friends of the graduates and CITY College from more than 10 countries.
The ceremony was followed by a reception at the foyer of Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
