Greece wasn’t big enough for Tasos Rogkas, 35, and neither was Europe!… After completing both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at CITY and having made an inroad into the Greek business world, Tasos made a decision to change direction towards China, where he is currently investigating the expanding Chinese market.
Tasos Rogkas did a BA in Finance & Accounting and continued his studies by completing CITY’s MBA. After graduating in 1996, Tasos got his first job through CITY’s Career at ‘Capital Trust’, a consulting company specializing in EU funding programmes. However, he stayed in touch with his alma mater. He became a lecturer in CITY’s Business Department, teaching ‘Finance & Accounting’. Despite the success of his initial entry into the Greek business world and the fact that it held a great deal of promise for the future, Tasos’s adventurous spirit led him to China, as he identified a gap in the market which needed filling. That gap was the lack of Greek and Chinese business interaction and cooperation due to intercultural differences and restraints of geographic location.
Moving to China
Through an EU funding programme, Tasos went to Peking where he attended a 15 month training programme for business executive on ‘How to do Business in China’. “The overall experience was amazing! Learning Chinese was a tough one, but I got the most out of this experience and learnt a lot more than I expected”, said Tasos adding “I definitely consider my stay in China a milestone of my life and a new beginning for my career.” After finishing his course he moved to Shanghai where he stayed for two years and worked as a freelancer, providing consulting services to businesses.
Having acquired all this new experience and knowledge, Tasos Rogkas came back to Greece in 2002 and decided to utilise all his new skills. He first worked for ‘Trimar’, a company importing merchandise from China. A big step in his career was his appointment as General Manager for the Hellenic-Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Athens. He was the first General Manager of the Chamber of Commerce and his main goal was to prepare the ground for enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
Kina Consulting
Tasos soon decided to launch his own business. His company, called ‘Kina Consulting’ aims to build bridges between the two countries and to facilitate cooperation between Greek and Chinese businesses. Kina Consulting is the link between the two countries specializing in business development for Greek companies in the Greater China market. It is involved in providing a range of services, from market research to establishment and management of China business Unit. When asked what he thinks of Greek and Chinese business people Tasos replied: “Greek and Chinese people have many substantial differences that inevitably affect business practice. The two countries have a great deal to gain from better cooperation which is why it is important to find common ground”
