Teaching and Learning

Education at the College aims at providing students with a thorough grounding in the academic subject of their choice, developing their critical and analytical skills, cultivating independent thinking and encouraging personal initiative. The educational ethos of the College is conveyed to the students through the curriculum and the everyday methods of teaching and learning which are related to the following issues:

SMALL CLASSES
The feature that distinguishes CITY College from other Higher Educational Institutions is small classes. This allows full communication and interaction between the lecturer and the students.

LECTURES
Small classes allow for the enrichment of the traditional lecture with active student participation. Students are encouraged to ask questions and express their opinions. Lectures aim at providing a broad introduction to the subject and offering guidance for further essential reading. There is frequent use of audio-visual aids, particularly on-line presentations, tape presentations and television, to assist the conveying information.

PANEL LECTURING
Panels are used to conduct a small number of the lecture hours. Panels make lectures more interesting and students more active. They help in communicating information easier. Panels consist of academics from other Universities and "professionals" from the "real world" with the appropriate academic background. Panel lecturing enables the students to be in close contact with the non-academic issues that relate to the field of their studies, introducing them from the very early stage to the professional circumstances of their chosen career.

GUEST SPEAKERS
Experts are called to give a speech to the class and transfer their knowledge and experience to the students. They are usually chosen to be leading experts that occupy top positions in industry so that the students can meet and discuss with them the real case studies of a local or international company.

EXTRA CLASSES
They are conducted by the lecturer and are used to solve problems and exercises or discuss specific topics set by the lecturer or by the students. They allow both teacher and student to focus their attention in more detail on specific subjects and explore them in greater depth. In cases where problems arise with individual students extra advising sessions are arranged.

INDIVIDUAL TUTORING
Students are encouraged to meet with their lecturer in person and discuss their queries. In addition, the lecturers call individual students that are not progressing well and set extra class hours, either on an individual basis or in groups of 2-3 students. Teaching Assistants also facilitate individual tutoring.

LABORATORY CLASSES
These are very significant in science classes from a student's first day in the College. There exist formal Lab classes, incorporated in their programme, where (with the presence of their lecturer) students put into practice the techniques and develop further they have learned in lectures. During the lab classes, students solve purpose-set laboratory exercises and discuss practical and theoretical matters with their Lecturer and the Lab assistant.

PRESENTATIONS
Students are requested to present their class papers to the class or to the whole student body. They are also encouraged to prepare group presentations on specific topics they select. Members of staff advise them on how to prepare and how to present their work. Presentation enhances the students’ self-confidence and develops their communication and professional skills.

DEBATE SESSIONS
Students are asked to volunteer to participate in debate sessions. They are divided into two groups and prepare to debate on a real life case study. They work in close cooperation with members of the staff to discuss the topic and receive guidance for further reading and debate preparation

'REAL LIFE' PROJECTS
'Real life' projects are carried out with the help of a local or international company, local authorities, voluntary work organizations and professional bodies. Students work in full cooperation with experts from the client company and with their lecturers.

PERSONAL TUTORIAL SYSTEM
The College has establish a Personal Tutorial System. The Tutorial System acts as a mean to improve students’ attainment and performance. The application of such a system is innovative and demands a very good comprehension on the part of the academic staff and extremely careful preparation in order to be successful.

ADVISING
Every student is allocated a personal advisor. Students of all levels meet with their advisors, officially, twice per semester. In addition to that, they can meet with him/her during regular office hours, or even outside these, if an individual needs urgent advice.
