The programme focuses on management theory and practice in the increasingly sophisticated leisure and tourism industry. There is a growing need for professionals to work in the tourism industry today and adopt a marketing based and strategic approach to the development and delivery of these service. This programme is designed for people interested in starting a managerial or entrepreneurial career in the leisure and tourism industry, or those already working in the profession and wishing to improve their management qualifications. It is a management programme based on current academic thinking and industry best practice. It provides students with an excellent opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the wider regional and international business community. The programme is addressed but not limited to students who have acquired their bachelor's degree in a wide range of either theoretical or quantitative fields.


 

An Extra Degree for our MSc in Leisure and Tourism Management Graduates!

Students completing the MSc in Leisure and Tourism Management programme are offered concurrently with our MSc, CMI's most senior qualification: the Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management & Leadership by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and thus gain two prestigious degrees from one programme.

Aims of the Course

The main aims of the programme are: 

  • To stay at the forefront of the training of managers by developing core functional management skills
  • To investigate the economic significance of the leisure and tourism industry
  • To apply theoretical concepts and principles of management to the rapidly developing leisure and tourism industry
  • To adopt an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of leisure and tourism management
  • To encourage planning and implementation of original research in the leisure industry
  • To promote a student-centered learning approach in an interactive environment
  • To enhance students' problem-solving capabilities and strategic thinking by developing key personal skills
  • To allow the development of students' specialist interests in the leisure and tourism industry

Other Information

Dissertation 
Subjects of dissertations can cover the entire spectrum of leisure and tourism management. As an example of what can be successfully covered, here is a short list of past subjects:
"Software CRM in the Hotel Industry"
"Measuring Service Quality in Cultural Events"
"Promoting Tourism in the South Mediterranean"
"Tourism Marketing on the Internet"
"Exploring Strategic Management Issues in Non-Profit Cultural Organisations"

The dissertation is realised in collaboration with a personal supervisor and gives the student the opportunity to research in depth a subject of his/her interest. The research may be conducted in a "real life" environment, allowing for the immediate interconnection of theory and practice.

Employment opportunities 
The profession covers a wide variety of specializations, including tourism, hotel and hospitality, entertainment, sports and recreation, countryside, art, and culture and heritage management. It is closely related to many other careers, such as planning, business management, marketing and teaching. Students who have successfully completed the programme will be qualified to pursue a successful career in the leisure and tourism industry.

Full time study 
The full time MSc in Leisure and Tourism Management is completed in one year and divided in two parts: one taught part (nine months) and one research part (three months).
Semester 1: October - January
Semester 2: February - June
Dissertation: July - September

Part time study 
The MSc in Leisure and Tourism Management is also offered part-time, over a period of two years. Lectures are usually held twice a week during evening hours.

Degree Title 
Successful graduates are awarded the postgraduate degree from the University of Sheffield: Master of Science in Leisure and Tourism Management. The title is awarded directly by the University of Sheffield.
