A University of Sheffield master's degree offered  
in Thessaloniki, Greece (1 year or 2 years of study),
in Sofia, Bulgaria (1 weekend per month),
in Tirana, Albania (1 weekend per month).


The MSc in Banking and Finance provides a rigorous and advanced intellectual training in the area of finance based on the most current and modern academic thinking and industry best practice. It is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in the financial sector, through a well-focused education in the theories and methodologies that are utilised today for valuation and management of financial instruments as well as the complexities behind the decision making processes required for investments. The programme is addressed to students who have recently acquired their bachelor's degree in economics, finance and related fields.


Aims of the Course

The main aims of the programme are to: 

  • Provide students with a comprehensive theoretical framework on key issues in banking and finance based on current theoretical and empirical research 
  • Provide extensive knowledge of the characteristics and the function of the  financial institutions and markets
  • Develop skills in financial analysis, banking and management through real case studies and regular project work, so that by graduation students will have sufficient skills for employment in specialised positions in financial institutions or in other businesses 
  • Emphasise key aspects of financial analysis and management under uncertainty and risk 

Graduates are expected to have developed skills needed to work within a group as well as skills related to studying original research output (academic journals, discussion papers, etc.). They are also expected to have acquired a sound background for pursuing further studies for a postgraduate degree by research.

Dissertation 
Subjects of dissertations can cover the entire spectrum of Banking and Finance. As an example of what can be successfully covered, here is a short list of past subjects:

The dissertation is realised in collaboration with a personal supervisor and gives the student the opportunity to research in depth a subject of his/her interest. The research may be conducted in a "real life" environment, allowing for the immediate interconnection of theory and practice.

Employment opportunities 
Students who successfully complete the programme can typically expect to gain employment or advance their career in a wide range of areas. Recent graduates have found employment in both financial institutions and banks, such as ALPHA BANK, ETEBA, Nationale Nederlanden, EUROBANK, Golden Invest, CITIBANK, Euroconsultants, World Bank, Stopanska, Raiffeisen and other banks and financial institutions across South - East Europe.

Full time study
The full time MSc in Banking and Finance is completed in one year and divided in two parts: one taught part (nine months) and one research part (three months).
Semester 1: October - January
Semester 2: February - June    
Dissertation: July - September

Part time study
The MSc in Banking and Finance is also offered part-time, over a period of two years. Lectures are usually held twice a week during evening hours.

Degree Title 
Successful graduates are awarded the postgraduate degree of the University of Sheffield: Master of Science in Banking and Finance. The title is awarded directly by the University of Sheffield.
