History
Thessaloniki - History
Thessaloniki, first established in 316 B.C. by Kassandros and is named after his wife Thessaloniki, the sister of Alexander the Great. Around the forth century B.C. Macedonia became the leading power of the Greek world thanks to King Phillip II, who declared himself the Leader of a Greek Confederacy. His dream of a pan-hellenic expedition against the Persians was destined to come true by his son Alexander the Great, who took his army to the banks of Indos River. Thessaloniki’s culture therefore expands both East and West. Thessaloniki is viewed as the second important city of the Byzantine Empire, next to Konstantinople, ornamented with numerous majestic and glamorous architectural works that displays all forms of Byzantine art.
