The Information & Learning Commons (ILC)

Welcome to the Information & Learning Commons (ILC), CITY College’s brand new state of the art facility. The ILC is housed on the 6th floor of the Leontos Sofou Building (3, L. Sofou str.) and started its operation in April 2009. The ILC aspires to become a benchmark of quality educational environment and studying experience.

Profile of the ILC
The new ILC is a dynamic, collaborative environment that brings together resources and services that support students in their learning, research, writing and use of technology. It combines, individual and group study spaces, in-depth reference service, and instruction from a variety of sources, including librarians and information technology staff, along with leisure and social spaces.

This innovative environment integrates the following:

  • CITY College’s Library collections
  • Library Services Desk
  • Library Information Services Office
  • Multimedia Room
  • Study Rooms
  • Collaborative Learning Spaces
  • PC working desks
  • Seminar Room
  • Social space and comfortable seating areas

In addition, the information resources of the ILC include:

  • over 30,000 printed volumes
  • non-print items in a wide range of formats; including audiovisual and multimedia equipment
  • subscription to a variety of electronic information resources

Printed items are housed throughout the main ILC area, all part of the collection of the former CITY College Library. Electronic information resources are available on both local and remote servers. These include, access to electronic journals and book collections, bibliographic and fulltext databases, as well as, digital libraries.

Aims of the ILC
The ILC's aims:

  • To support the learning, teaching, and research needs of a high quality academic institution, by acquiring and organising a relevant and well balanced collection in a wide variety of formats.
  • To provide high quality services to the students and staff of the College and promote the use of innovative technologies in order to offer a number of important services to local and remote users.
  • Furthermore, to offer an accessible, collaborative learning environment where people can pursue and share ideas.

Users of the ILC
The ILC’s printed and electronic information resources are intended to be used by the community of CITY College. Materials are acquired basically to support the College's programmes. The collection is also used by various other groups, such as students from other institutions and members of the public. However, selection and development of the collection take little account of the needs of such user groups.

Staff of the ILC
The ILC is run by the Vice-Principle of Research, Innovation & External Relations, the Head Librarian, professionally trained, full-time employed librarians, and support staff. Additionally, the ILC integrates two important services on campus, the Library Information Services and the College Computing Services. This collaboration facilitates a more convenient and efficient approach in providing services to the users and at the same time educating users to make the best use of these services.
